| An Extensive
Environmental Protection System |
Minebea considers environmental protection at all of its production
bases worldwide to be a cornerstone of its management policy.
All Minebea Group plants worldwide have obtained ISO 14001 certification,
the international standard for environmental management systems.
MEHC's two plants were certified in December 1997, the first
Japanese-affiliated plants in Shanghai to achieve this goal.
MEHC's plants are situated in a scenic
area near Lake Dianshan-hu, which is also a famous tourist spot.
Both plants have been equipped with advanced, environmentally
sound wastewater treatment facilities and boast large green
belts, which occupy more than 30% of the combined site areas.

Because of its location near Lake Dianshan-hu, which is also
the principal source of drinking water for the residents of
Shanghai, MEHC must adhere to stringent wastewater regulations.
All wastewater generated by the Shanghai and Xicen plants are
treated at advanced facilities within the respective factory
sites. These facilities are equipped with monitors and automated
monitoring systems, enabling 24-hour supervision of facility
operations. Treated water is used in factory lavatories and
sprinkler systems.

Lake Dianshan-hu Environmental Protection Fund |
In April
1996, MEHC established the Shanghai-Minebea Lake Dianshan-hu
Environmental Protection Fund with the aim of helping preserve
the quality of the water in Lake Dianshan-hu and the environment
of the surrounding area. The fund is the first of its kind to
be set up by a foreign firm in Shanghai.
In May 2001, MEHC increased the Shanghai-Minebea
Lake Dianshan-hu Environmental Protection Fund to RMB 110 million,
from RMB 7.5 million. This was done in commemoration of the
July 2001 50th anniversary of Minebea's founding. Accrued interest
from the fund is used to finance a variety of activities. To
date, the fund has assisted efforts to plant cherry tree saplings
along nearby Highway No. 318, build green belts in adjacent
areas and install chemical toilets in local residences. In May
2001, the fund also donated saplings to the Shanghai Sapling
Center. The saplings will later be supplied to the city of Shanghai
for use in greening programs in the city.
In May 2006, RMB 1.0 million was provided by the fund to dredge and plant greenery around 14 rivers, which are parts of Lake Dianshan-hu water system that had not been maintained for over 10 years.ĦĦIt took 4 months to dredge the river beds about 120 thousand cubic meters of sludge. Those 14 rivers have been regenerated as rivers which have clean water and shores, smooth streams and greenery.
